17 November 2007 - Kiama

Only a small field made the journey south to scenic Kiama.  There were the usual variety of excuses - sick, friends wedding, better offer or other commitments.  So Keith has won the award for the most popular club event of the year.  It must have been the lure of the sausage sandwich or the bribes offered.

The courses consisted of compulsory controls and bonus controls (with time bonuses).  Dayle was worried that the time bonuses didn't offer enough incentive, but we probably got it close.  Even with a small field, it was interesting to see the different strategies.  Doug only collected the bonus controls if they were on the way between the compulsory controls - so he ended up with a fast time and small bonus.  Whereas Ian, Warwick and Barry ventured further away from the optimal route to pick up the bonuses.  Ian could have won, if he stopped at the memorial to the SS Bombo bonus control, which he ran past along the Kiama Harbour foreshore.  Sue also had trouble with this control and read the plaque about the fig tree and didn't see the one next to it about the ship.

20 October 2007 - Helensburgh

Several first timers turned up to have a go at this event.  Sherryn Meeth did the Blue Course first and then followed up with the Green which was not an easy one.  Leah Carlon and Jeremy Goode are doing Physical Education at Wollongong Uni and they were required to do an orienteering course and did quite well.  Some of our club members chose the long course when the shorter one would probably have been more suitable given the density of the undergrowth now.

25 August 2007 - Kiama Downs

A record roll up for this the most prestigious event on the local calendar with no fewer than 47 competitors turned up at for the Kiama Downs run of the year. There is an obvious challenge here to Dave Green for later in the year.

The huge turn up was boosted by about 35 trainee PE teachers from UOW. This is the second year that we have hosted an event for the teaching faculty. As part of their course there is an orienteering component and the choice was to research or actually participate in an orienteering event. I think most chose the latter.

We decided this year to try and create a social atmosphere after the run hoping that most would stay instead of rushing off after their run. We offered those that came a choice of a run and a sausage sizzle or just a run and everyone stayed for the sausage sizzle, which gave us the chance of announcing the winners and some discussion on the reasons for some of the DNF’s(did not finish). They were keen to know who performed best and it apparently came as no surprise who the winners and place getters were. Because people stayed and chatted there was an opportunity for discussion about the sport and when the next one might be on etc. The sausage sizzle had the dual role of satisfying hunger but for some that got a little disorientated in the reserve on the return leg of the short course could smell the sausages cooking and this led them home.

The DNF’s for some of the teachers occurred on one control only. This was the telegraph pole tucked into the green in the reserve just behind the finish. Unfortunately not enough attention was paid to which one of the telegraph poles they had to check and many chose the easiest pole to locate instead of the required one. Again just like last year they needed very little instruction and had no trouble doing what was required and all completed a successful run except for that one control. Interestingly the old hands needed the most instruction and asked the most questions and were the most disorientated at the start before taking off.

Jim Wilson managed to get a hold of the answer sheet instead of the blank question sheet before a diligent organiser spotted the error and managed to wrestle it back him.

Apart from the teachers there were a number of newcomers as well as a good roll up of the usual suspects. Among the newcomers was guy from Port Kembla, Vu Moyo who has not done it since school but was keen to pick it up again, as well as a family of locals from Gerringong. Dayle Green brought along a couple of friends Jan and Carol .

There was a lot of work in preparing to feed as well as organise to run novice orienteers and my thanks go to Margaret and Simone for manning (womaning) the BBQ as well as procuring all the necessaries. There were many loaves that had to be buttered, onions to be pre cooked, as well as sausages to be cooked. The $5 dollar offer included a sausage sandwich with onions, a drink of cold soft drink or glass of wine, and a choice of short or long course. Pretty good value. As it turned out we just managed to make a very small profit thanks to some very smart bulk shopping and a good turn out of competitors.

My Thanks also to Katie Thompson for helping to co ordinate and be the contact for her fellow students. Although they did start to turn up about an hour early. I could have done with the extra hour to get better prepared as I was cleaning the BBQ at the time.

21 July 2007 - Cronulla

Right up until the last moment the sunny weather decided to have a break and up came the rain clouds from the South.  Maps had been prepared so that the start could be moved to the comforts and shelter of Nicholson Parade (our place) if required.  I took a punt and stuck it out at Oak Park and although cold, the rain didn’t come to anything.

First to arrive was Philippe and Paul Donnadieu.  Paul had already attended State cross country at Eastern Creek earlier on but was keen to ‘warm down’ on the 5.5K long course!  Philippe, coach and mentor played a very supportive role and tracked Paul by car for the first couple of controls so that Paul could offload his tracksuit as he warmed up.

Other club members arrived and looked a little reluctant in getting off their warm gear but most took up the challenge.  Paul’s friend Todd (local to Cronulla) came along just to see what it was all about and shadowed by Paul, did the Medium course.  Philippe was so inspired by his son’s efforts, after all he had been running for most of the day, that he decided he must also run the long course even though the only running gear he had were his jogging shoes.  A great effort from the Donnadieu’s.

Permanent control features were selected for the courses.  Both Long 5.5K and the Medium course 3.75K used some of the same control features.  There were no takers for the Short Course 2.75K.  The wooden steps down the cliff at Bass & Flinders Point were tackled in different ways.  Ian ran to the bottom and up and counted them all, Dayle went down 10 steps and counted the rest and Keith stood at the top and counted from there – I wonder which would have been the quickest.?  There were 32 in total – a little extra aerobic activity thrown in by the organiser.  The padlocks on the white structure in Darook Park were a little tricky.  There were five altogether but two were around the side and were easily overlooked.  Similarly the bench seats on the wharf were not easy to see from a distance which meant a few more extra steps on the 5.5K Long course.  Interestingly the first and last controls were set such that there was a route choice and some of you chose the road option and some the Esplanade option.  This is what makes orienteering challenging – there is no set way to approach a control – it is completely your choice.

Finish times were close with all the long course runners displaying similar fitness levels.  Keith managed to run the course clocking up two different finish times, that of the O clock and Keith’s very own stopwatch.  A dilemma for the organiser!  Were the start and finish times recorded incorrectly or was Keith’s stopwatch out of kilter?  Where was Terry Bluett when you needed him to contest the result?  It was decided to give Keith his moment of glory.  Ecstatic with the news he managed to weave the magic “38 mins” into the conversation more than a few times during the evening.  (Keith, if that stopwatch of yours is loosing time – 5 minutes to be precise, you had better get a new one for Christmas).

Back to the Froudes after the event, a small group relaxed around home cooked pizzas, vino and pasta dishes whilst David stepped us through photos taken at JWOC on his laptop.  Margaret Jay joined us for supper having just returned from a matinee performance of Priscilla in the City.  The Mills boys took on the X-box with a little help from Ken and David and were rewarded with several board games that the Froudes were clearing out.  Spirograph was a particular hit with Stevie.  Helen and Dave had a quick game of Kerplunk even though most of the marbles were missing and the rest Helen kindly offered to donate to the local fete!  Thanks to everyone who came to the event.  See you all next time – hopefully a little warmer.

30 June 2007 - Cordeaux Heights

Another sunny day in Cordeaux Heights, although the wind was a bit cold. We had a small but enthusiastic turnout for a run around the paths of Cordeaux. Later a select group had some curry and a chat, and then watched  the Wallabies beating the All Blacks   ...  what a finish, almost as good as Barry's.

10 March 2007 - Thirroul Beach Park

This event was the first on the local event calendar for 2007.  The day was fine and pleasant although a tad windy in the shade.   The format of this event was a standard orienteering event with a difference.  In addition to running the course in the quickest time, it was possible to “buy” extra time by collecting controls that were off to one side of the shortest route.  The regular controls were circles numbered 1-5 as normal.  The bonus controls worth 2 minutes each were squares and were labelled A-P.

Eight big people and three kids on bikes came to try their luck and speed on two courses, a shorter 2.3km course and a longer 5.6km one.  The actual distances run were somewhat further with the bonus points, but with the courses run mainly along the coastal strip, good times were recorded.  Keith was a bit unlucky because although he ran the quickest time, he forgot to mark a couple of squares which would have shortened his overall time by quite a bit and may have put him into top sport.  Jim and Andrew went for the squares and got them but it took a bit longer doing so.  The lads on bikes enjoyed their ride despite some initial reservations.  I suspect the concept of mountain bike orienteering may have taken hold.

Quite a few people were able to make the AGM and Club Meeting that followed a very pleasant BBQ at the Mills’s.  Thanks to everyone who came along and participated.
