SummerGong 3 Results

A good crowd of old and new orienteers turned up at MacCabe Park for SummerGong 3

The weather was cooler than last week but the competition was hotter at MacCabe Park today. Simon, the winner of last year’s SummerGong Series, set a challenging course through the light industrial and residential streets of South Wollongong. Angus Sheddon of SHOO had another win and took the points. Canberra Junior Oliver Mill used the course as a training run and visited all 30 controls to collect 600 points but was 18 minutes late back.

It was the biggest field of the series so far with 31 individuals/groups in the score event and 8 kids tackling the short course (some more than once). Congratulations to Wiley for running the course in 6.36 minutes on his second lap.

So far we have had 44 entrants in the score event. With one week to go Angus is looking the favourite although Alex, Linda, Natalya, might just pass him depending on who starts and finishes next week.

The final SummerGong event is at Flagstaff Hill Wollongong near the lighthouse. We suggest you come early to bag a good parking spot.

SummerGong 2 Results

There were only three words to describe today’s second event in the SummerGong Series – hot, hot and hot (and I’m not just referring to the competition). The 34 degree temperatures made getting around the course hard work, but this was offset by the fantastic views from the start and finish point (great choice Salme!) and the opportunity for a cooling dip in the ocean for those who came prepared.

Nineteen competitors entered the score event with IKO’s Alex Karavaev and Simon Louis coming in equal first with 380 points. Thirteen juniors (individuals and groups) entered the 1km kids course with Rory Sheddon of SHOO finishing in the quickest time of 22:31.

SummerGong Results

A sunny Sunday drew 27 entries to our first event of the series at Stuart Park. Highest point scorer of the day was Angus Sheddon of SHOO who collected 490 points in a time of 44:16, while David Green of IKO came in second with 460 points in a very similar time. Doug Jay of SHOO was a close third with 430 points. The highest scoring woman was IKO’s Salme Fuller with 410 points.

ONSW Presentations

Richard and David collected the medals on behalf of the winning Division 3 Metroleague team

The annual ONSW Presentation function was held today at Homebush Bay following a fun sprint around Bicentennial Park which was part of the Saturday Orienteering Series (SOS). A handful of club members were on hand including David and Dayle, Richard and James.

Picking up their medals for the winning Division 3 Metroleague team were David Green and Richard Lane, while David also received a medal for highest point score in Division 3. Medals were also awarded to the remainder of the successful Metroleague team -Alex Karavaev, Natalya Filippova, Ian Froude, Keith Jay and Simon Louis,

Other IKO members to be recognised at the awards were Julie Mann and Vicki Wilmott who received badges for their State League performances in W55AS.

IKO Magnetrons bring home the prize in Division 3 of MetrO League finals

CONGRATULATIONS to IKO Magnetrons team members Alexander Karanov, Natalya Filipova, David Green, Richard Lane and Simon Louis for their outstanding efforts in winning the final of the 3^rd Division of the MetrO league competition on Sunday 23^rd August at Nurragingy in western Sydney. The team had a resounding win against arch rivals Uringa – Central Coast – 34 point to 21 points. Four IKO runners were in the top 5 of the Division 3 runners. Congratulations also go to all those runners who participated as members of the Division 3 team throughout the five race series. The team won all six races.

Further congratulations go to David Green who tied for the Metroleague individual medal in Division 3 with 41 points and to Simon Louis for an outstanding performance by getting the maximum 40 points on only 4 runs. Simon is our newest member who only started orienteering this year.

Unfortunately the IKO Lyrebirds had another loss in the 5^th Division despite Salme Fuller yet again being the fastest runner in the Division on the day and being pipped for the Division 5 individual medal by two points.

The MetrO League is an annual inter-club competition for greater Sydney metropolitan clubs. The series runs from March through until August/September with events conducted on one Sunday morning per month. Entrants run individually but earn points for their team based on their relative time. It’s great fun as clubs compete head-to-head and members of all ages earn points for their club.
