Get ready for Illawarra Map Running 2022

Organisers are busy preparing for the 2022 season of Summergong, now rebranded as “Illawarra Map Running”. The locations have been locked in with maps focussing on the south of the Illawarra this year, from Gwynneville to Minnamurra.

The annual series returns to a weekly format this year. Although it has a new name the aim remains the same as previous years – to provide opportunities for people new to orienteering to give the sport a go with some easy navigation around the streets, parks and coastal reserves of the Illawarra.

Three courses will be on offer each week – short (2km), medium (4km) and long (6km). Competitors will need to find the fastest way between each marked control on a map to complete the course and return to the finish a potential winner!

Beginners can participate as a group of family or friends, or test themselves individually. Help is always on hand from experienced club members to get you started. Our park and street events do not require a compass – if you can read a street directory or google maps then you can read an orienteering map!

Week 1: Sunday 30 January at Gwynneville
Week 2: Sunday 6 February at Windang
Week 3: Sunday 13 February at Shellharbour
Week 4: Sunday 20 February at Minnamurra

See the coming events page for more details.

Special Promotion!
As for previous years we are offering a FREE CLUB MEMBERSHIP valid to end of 2022 for any non-members that complete 3 out of 4 of the events. Worth $60 for Seniors or $130 for a family!

River and Bay Orienteering Series 2020

Last years River Bay Series
2019 RBOS event at San Souci

Its been a bit of a patchy year for orienteering but we are pleased to announce that in partnership with our friends at Uringa Orienteers we will be kicking off the 2020 River and Bay Orienteering Series this weekend. Our first event is at Tempe.

Every Sunday afternoon from October 25 to December 13 we will give you the chance to explore the parks and streets of the Cooks River and Botany Bay. Walk or run around the line courses (2 km, 4 km or 6 km) or challenge yourself with the Score Course where you collect as many points as you can in 45 minutes. As always there will be some passionate and experienced orienteers on hand to provide assistance for beginners. Our courses are suitable for all ages and abilities from 8 to 88, go solo or in a group.

Starts are from 4 to 5pm and all courses close at 6pm.

Orienteering on hold (again!)

Following discussions with ONSW regarding restrictions on community sport we will sadly need to cancel our next two planned events. The restrictions on mixing volunteers and participants from different regions or parts of Sydney unfortunately renders most of our club and state events unfeasible to run.

The event planned for Sutherland this Saturday 22 August is postponed to a later date. The new date will be decided once we get further clarity on when these restrictions will be lifted.

The State League and Schools Championships planned for September 5-6 is also cancelled and may be run on the same maps next year.

A copy of the advice to community sport organisers from the Chief Health Officer can be viewed here. It will be in place for at least six weeks before being reviewed.

We’re back!
